Armoury Park

Armoury Park and Railway Station environmental enhancement project.

The Armoury Park garden is now very popular and well usedPitlochry is a town whose residents' economic well being is almost entirely dependent on the tourism industry. It was recognised by the Bloom Committee that this part of the town was not of a sufficiently high environmental quality given the number of tourists who pass here every day on their way to the Dam & Fishladder. Arriving at the Station it is also their first sight of Pitlochry.

The Armoury Road site, on the north end of the railway station and highly visible to train passengers had gown into dereliction and become a dumping and fly tipping area. Work in this location involved demolition of two old buildings, total clearance of the site and removal of overgrown shubbery to create an open public space of quality design.

This design incorporated disabled parking, drystone wall features, wheelchair friendly pedestrian path system, picnic tables, standing stone sculptural features together with sofArmoury Parkt landscaping features of grass, shrubs and trees.

The Railway Station and War Memorial Path offered an image of neglect making for a poor impression to passengers alighting from the trains. The station entrance has an improved car parking layout, including easier parking for disabled drivers, a graded slope to the Booking Office for wheelchair users and a much improved station forecourt using natural stone, slabs, setts and appropriate soft landscaping.

The path on the south side of the station leading down to the War Memorial and the centre of town has been totally upgraded to include a well-lit asphalt path with handrail and rest spots for the elderly and disabled, new fencing together with turfed areas and raised shrub beds. We have also placed two new containers at the entrance to the Station with sponsorship from Firstgroup, our Victorian Railway Porter and in 2007 our recycled Welcome signs.

They also extend grateful thanks to the other national and local supporters, who helped us make the Armoury Park project happen.
